Contract No.: GOCE-CT-2004-505420
Coordinator: Dr. Paul Samuels, HR Wallingford, UK
Project duration: 2004 - 2009
Official project website: www.floodsite.net

The FLOODsite Integrated Project covers the physical, environmental, ecological and socio-economic aspects of floods from rivers, estuaries and the sea. The FLOODsite will produce improved understanding of specific flood processes and mechanism and methodologies for flood risk analysis and management starting with management of risk and ends up with detailed assessment in specific areas. It includes specific actions on the hazard of coastal extremes and flash flood forecasting, as well as understanding of vulnerability and flood impacts, which are critical to improving the mitigation of flood risk from all causes. The project seeks to identify technologies and strategies for sustainable flood mitigation and defence.

Several pilot studies are included in FLOODsite. These will identify lessons from recent floods, and test the proposed operational use of methods on integrated risk management and sustainable flood defence (e.g. the Thames estuary, the Elbe river basin or the Ebro coastal delta) or manitoring and validation of flash floods (e.g. Adige river, than sites in France and Spain).

Moreover, FLOODsite will develop common language, guidance and tools for dissemination of the project results and professional training packages. FLOODsite will build upon the previous and current European and national research and practice in river and coastal flood processes and flood risk mitigation methods to promote consistency of approach.
